Architecture

The building where ALT is located is part of the complex of the first Italcementi Italy whose construction began in 1883. Construction continued over time and it was then given its completed form by the architect Ernesto Pirovano, who also designed the Milan Railway Station and the entrance of the Monumental Cemetary in Bergamo. Eclectic in character, its façade presents an arcade supported by slender columns and bordered by a balustrade with the two ends in Moorish style turrets. The building housed the space for the designing and autonomous creation of the innovative machines of the avant-guard company Italcementi.   The basement which holds the 3500msq exhibition space is supported by huge cement pillars with barrel vaults containing portholes which filter down light giving a suspended, oriental style atmosphere. The renovations on ALT’s space, as well as the rest of the building which holds lofts, atelier, studios and a restaurant have not altered the original structure. They were carried out with construction methods considering a possible future removal, continual re-adaptation to new assignments and various uses. This has led to innovative solutions, combining functionality and the feel of a splendid industrial relic which has been preserved.
